We’re just about one month out from the start of our July Timber Frame Workshop. Happily, the pieces are starting to fall into place. This year we’re collaborating with Brice of Timber Frame HQ on this very simple and beautiful pavilion design. Brice is doing the drawing work — we’ll have super tight plans that students will be referencing during the course. I’m excited to have these plans available. Clear drawings contribute to a better understanding of the entire layout process.

10×10 Pavilion Design

This design is great for learning — it’s clean, straightforward, and if all goes well it should be within reach to complete by the conclusion of the workshop. That’s always the hope, at least! Simple joinery helps make that possible.

The 10×10 timber frame will serve as an outdoor hangout space. Later in the summer, we’ll build short walls between the posts and screen in the rest. We’re locating the pavilion in a private, shady location on our homestead where folks can string a hammock between posts or enjoy a bug-free night chatting with friends while watching legions of fireflies light up the sky. It will be a sweet addition to the homestead hangout and hosting scene.

I just submitted the order for the material. Luckily, we have a couple of sawmill options within a close distance to home and everything should be ready with enough time to spare. After some deliberating, we decided to go with white oak for the timbers. White oak is heavvvvy, but quite beautiful and resistant to carpenter bees (which are a bit of a nuisance around here).

More soon as prep work for the Timber Frame Workshop continues!
