Natural Building Internship Program 2012
Are you interested in learning natural building skills?
Want to help organize and participate in two natural building workshops?
Would you like to experience community life in a sustainable ecovillage?
If you answer yes to these questions, then you should be interested in this internship opportunity.
The Year of Mud wants to host an enthusiastic intern during April to October 2012 to help with the construction of a timber frame & straw bale house.
The Natural Home You’ll Help Build:
The house you’ll help construct is a timber frame construction with round wood elements, straw bale walls, passive solar design, a living roof, earthen plaster, and other notable natural features.
We are seeking builders with some carpentry or general construction experience.
This season, interns will have the opportunity to participate in two comprehensive natural building workshops, including timber frame and straw bale building (a $3000 value if you were to take the courses separately). In addition to participating in these events, interns will help plan and organize the courses alongside the hosts. Responsibilities will include helping to establish infrastructure necessary for the workshop, acting as assistant during the actual courses, and aiding with various hosting responsibilities. Prospective interns will not only help build a natural home from the ground up, but gain valuable experience running public natural building courses.
Your Living Situation At Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage:
Other than gaining essential natural building experience, you will have the opportunity to experience community life here at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage. You’ll live closely with Dancing Rabbit members and have the chance to partake in wider community events and activities (potlucks, ultimate Frisbee games, dance parties, swimming in the pond, celebrations), eat seasonal and organic meals (mostly simple vegetarian meals) in the Wabi-sabi food co-op, and enjoy a summer in rural Missouri.
As a temporary resident of the community, you will also be expected to partake in community responsibilities, such as weekly cook shifts and cleaning. There may be some opportunity to help with gardening and other tasks.
Your Building Qualifications and Experience:
- natural building
- general construction
We are particularly looking for people with at least basic carpentry skills. Natural building experience is a major plus. If you are responsible, proactive, have a strong work ethic, and are capable of regularly doing physical work, you will be fit for this role. As an intern, your cost of living here at Dancing Rabbit will be covered in exchange for a small fee, and approximately 4-5 days of labor per week. Non-building labor responsibilities will include cook shifts as part of a food co-op, and occasional cleaning shifts.
