Hallway with Shaker Pegs

We’re nearing the end… I think…

Life rule #327: everything always takes much longer than you think. Life rule #328: it’s terribly easy to forget how true rule #327 is every single time. Well, remodeling our house has been no exception. When we first acquired our new land (one of these days I’ll stop saying “new”), it was early summer, but we couldn’t relocate until September.

Once we showed up and moved in, we basically immediately starting remodeling the house, and we’ve been going at it more or less since then with the exception of a few diversions here and there. Yep, I thought we’d be completed much sooner than this. But finally… yes, I can see the light at the end of the hallway and we’re almost “done”. (Rule #2349: your house is never “done”.)

I’ve been working on finish carpentry, and Jacob has been putting tile in the new shower. Most of the major work left remains in the bathroom — getting that dang shower completed, and then installing the sink and building the urine-diverting humanure toilet rig. Other than that, it’s been nice to finally put some attention to the functionality stuff – building shelves, putting in pegboards, etc.

I had a lot of fun making these Shaker-style pegboards, as you can see in the main image. It’s amazing how such a simple little addition can add a lot of visual interest, and of course provide a super useful place to hang things. We plan on eventually making candle holders that can be moved around from peg to peg.

Other things you can see in the image, but may not be obvious… those walls have been newly painted with milk paint, and the floor is our red oak hardwood floor with that awesome natural oil floor finish. One of these days, I’m going to finally nab photos of some of the updated spaces in the house. It’s come a long ways!

Until then, I have a few more items to check off my list… but I think it might go pretty quickly. Yea…
